Today, March 8, is International Women's Day. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
The very first International Women's Day was way back in 1909 in the United States. Between the 1930s and 1960s the popularity of the event faded as feminism came more to the fore.
International Women's Day is now an official public holiday in numerous countries as diverse as China, Russia, and Vietnam. There are also traditions in some countries to mark the day. In Italy for example men give women yellow mimosas. In many other countries women are also given flowers or alternatively chocolates. Even employers get in on the act, giving gifts to their female workers.
Do you celebrate the day, and if so, in what way?
